James "Logan" Howlett begins his new life as a quarry worker and discovers that despite his attempts to stay in the shadows, he is picked on by a bully, who happens to be the camp cook, named Cookie. Cookie loves to use his massive size to intimidate Logan and to rough him up. Logan fights his desires to retaliate and is often rescued by Smitty, the camp foreman. As years march on, Logan begins to develop a wilder side that he keeps hidden from those in camp, including Rose, but which he embraces on occassion by running loose up on a mountainside. His senses become honed and he displays highly developed skills as a hunter. He manages to find enough game to provide for himself and Rose and for others who are struggling with their rations, which begins to bring him notoriety amongst the camp. This also enflames the jealousy of Cookie who increases his violence toward Logan. During one particularly savage beating, Cookie is interrupted by Smitty, who beats Cookie down, which allows Logan
